Urban Umbrella

In the summer of 2011 Caliper Studio fabricated a full-size prototype of the Urban Umbrella, Young-Hwan Choi‘s international competition winning design for an alternative to the ubiquitous New York sidewalk shed. The prototype is the result of a several month long collaborative effort with Choi and Andrés Cortés/Sarrah Khan of Agencie Group, the New York architecture firm who have been working to make the winning scheme a reality.

For this project, Caliper Studio was both fabricator and fabrication consultant. Detailed mockups, three-dimensional models and shop drawings produced by Caliper were an essential tool to communicate design intent and performance requirements to the various stakeholders, including the New York City Department of Buildings.

Since its unveiling in July, the Urban Umbrella has been featured on New York 1, AM New York and several other news outlets.
