West 29th Street Cantilever

Designed for a townhouse sized lot with the air-rights from its two neighbors, this twelve story condominium building is to be located in West Chelsea near the High Line.  The form is derived from the peculiarities of the site and zoning envelope producing a fifteen-foot cantilever over both neighbors starting at the 5th floor.  With two apartments on each of the cantilevered floors each has outdoor space with decks facing the Hudson River and downtown.

The folded metal facade follows a unique tiling pattern using a simple notching and bending fabrication technique.  Custom software was developed to resolve the tiling pattern and wrap the facade.  The panels are both irregular in plan and extend off the surface at varying heights creating a subtle texture that appears to shimmer as each panel catches a different ray of light.
