This private commission allowed Caliper the opportunity to explore ideas related to form-making driven by computation and fabrication. Each of the thirty-six tiles is the result of a very specific set of operations related to two-dimensional shape cutting and three-dimensional bending. Though the initial operations were simple, the variety of resultant shapes was astounding. In order to deal with this amazing complexity borne of simplicity, computational techniques and algorithms were developed to analyze and predict tiling behaviors. As a test of the system, the anarchy of shapes was forced to contain itself within a simple rectangular boundary.
The project was designed, detailed, fabricated and installed by Caliper Studio. To learn more about how the piece was made, see the fabrication page.
